Cork flooring has become very popular with institutional as well as home owners. It provides a unique look and is an environmentally conscious alternative to other flooring products.

Eco Forest uses the material extracted from the bark of the cork oak tree, which only grows in the forests of Mediterranean countries. The country of origin of the flooring plantations that Eco Forest cork is made from is Portugal.

Cork waste from the stopper industry and low quality bark are used to produce granules. These are classified according to density and grain sizes. Flooring tiles are produced from cork granules bound with resins and molded to obtain the desired density under pressure and heat.

This past decade the floating floor technology has been successfully adapted to cork tiles to produce one of the highest quality floor coverings. This flooring type has been used around the world and in this country for over a century.

    Yesterday’s prestigious applications include:

    - The First Congregational Church in Chicago, Illinois - Installed in 1890

    - The Mayo Clinic & Plummer Building – Installed in original building in 1912 adding some additional flooring in 1940 for a total of 300,000 sq. ft.

    - Falling Water, Western PA, residence designed with cork floors by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1937 just to name a few

Cork flooring is coming back strongly as architects and designers are very enthusiastic about the distinctive look of the material, the need for better indoor air quality and overall comfort, as well as related environmental issues.

Underlayment, a lower density material, is becoming more and more accepted as an economical and well performing alternative for sound insulation in building construction.

The bark was designed by Mother Nature to protect the tree during its average 500-year lifespan. Not only is the bark inherently fire resistant to temperature changes prevailing in those regions, it is home to more than 38 species of insects, including the termite, and to the development of microbes.

It is important to note that only the bark is peeled off to be used for flooring every decade. The tree itself is never felled. The bark is a vegetal tissue made by an agglomeration of dead cells filled with air and lined with alternating layers of cellulose and waxy substance called suberin. Hence the cork oak tree scientific name: Quercus Suber. Thus the forest is kept alive and the habitat undisturbed.

    Antimicrobial and Insect Repellent

Even termites are unwelcome. Suberin, the inherent substance of cork is a natural insect repellent and also contains antimicrobials to fight the development of mildew. What a perfect indoor crawling ground for children! If you suffer from allergies and like the warm feeling of a carpeted room, this is definitely your best alternative.

    Thermally and Acoustically Insulated

The presence in cork of over 100 million air cells per cubic inch and the prism shape of that cellular structure incapacitate the effects of temperature and sound. It reduces impact noise, a great asset for applications such as multi level housing, office spaces, museums and places of worship.

    Fire Resistant

This type of floor is also a fire inhibitor, not spreading the flame. It also does not release any toxic gases on combustion.

    Comfortable

Cork provides a comfortable cushion underfoot as it gives under compression. It bounces back naturally so recovery marks left by furniture will leave a minimal indentation, less noticeable than on wood, carpet or vinyl floors.

    Durable and Easy to Maintain

Eco Forest Cork Floors come with three coats of a durable UV cured flexible acrylic finish. These coats stop spills and stains from permeating the floor and causing damage. Only sweeping and damp mopping are required for regular maintenance.

For any commercial application, 2-3 additional coats of a urethane or like product would be needed. We recommend BonaKemi Traffic for commercial use.

    Recommendations

Cork is a natural product. Differences in the structure and shades of planks occur naturally and cannot be accepted as valid grounds for complaints.

The planks should be acclimated by opening the boxes and leaving in the middle of the room in which they are to be laid for 48 hours.

Upon opening the boxes, check that all planks are in the proper condition for installation.

Do not install these floors in humid room spaces such as bathrooms, saunas and laundry rooms.

Always leave a gap of approximately 3/8” between the edges of the flooring and perimeter walls to allow for possible expansion and movement.
