Get Floored: The Floor & Decor Blog

How long have you worked in interior design?

I have an educational background in design, and I’ve been busy in the design industry since I before I graduated college. I have a lot of experience doing different kinds of things; I have done everything from merchandising for major furniture stores to designing custom bedding and window treatments. Now, I’m with Floor & Decor, helping customers build their dream spaces!

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is very minimal and clean, but I would classify my look as “bohemian minimalism” or “modern bohemian.” I’m a fan of white walls, dark flooring, and a punch of color with bold accent pieces. I gravitate to southwestern patterns, too since I get to see them all the time here in Texas.

How do you stay on top of trends?

I’m always searching the internet for new trends and ideas. It’s amazing how you can be inspired and influenced by people all over the world.

Is there a go-to product that you’re really exciting about right now? What is it, and why do you like it? I’m so excited about our new matte black hexagon tile! I love the richness and sleek look of dark tile. Also, the shape is a nice, unexpected detail as well. It’s a nice change from the more common square or rectangular tile.

Is there a room or type of space that you most enjoy designing?

I would say that I like designing for master bedrooms. It can be its own space apart from the rest of the home, so I think it should be calm and comforting.

Take us through the design process, from start to finish. What does this journey look like?

I start out by asking as many questions as I can to really understand the customer’s style and most importantly, the function of the space they are working on. I typically with through the store with them so they can see and feel products that I think will work well. By exploring the products together, I can help guide them in the direction they’re looking to go. Once I help them find something they love, the rest of the project usually all falls into place from there.

What recent project have you been most excited about designing?

I was excited to work on a new condo development in downtown New Braunfels, TX.  Every unit used some form of subway tile with contrasting grout color for the shower walls and backsplash areas.  We did use a variety of sizes so every unit had its own unique look. The real wow factor came from the flooring. My client was not afraid to use bold, geometric patterns on the floor since everything else was so neutral. It ended up having a really hip and fresh vibe, which was perfect for the downtown area.

What trends are you most excited to see? What trends are your clients bringing to you?

The trends my clients are bringing are clean and fresh. Everyone is scaling back and going for minimalist looks with a twist, like modern farmhouse. Everyone shows me their Pinterest boards, and we have more and more people referencing our Floor & Decor Inspiration catalog, especially the spread on patterned tile in the Floor & Decor Inspiration Catalog.

I’m seeing clients scaling back from the all-gray look and becoming more adventurous with colors. I had a client who chose a white tile backsplash and white marble countertops. In order to offset all of the white, she painted her cabinets a beautiful, deep navy blue color. Not only did it look extremely classy, the dark color cabinetry really helped showcase her backsplash as well.
