Designer Spotlight: Allison

Allison of Brookfield, Wisconsin lives and breathes interior design, and she’s been helping homeowners find their look at her local Floor & Decor since 2017. See how she stays on top of trends and comes up with design solutions for her clients.

How long have you worked in interior design?

I graduated from Concordia University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in fine art. I have worked in many different fields of design. I have worked my way up from being associate in design to a visual merchandiser manager, and now I’m working with Floor and Decor!

How do you stay on top of trends?

I follow style blogs and social media all the time to see what is trending in fashion and design, especially on platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz. I was also recently at a design show, so I got a sneak peek at some of the latest and up-and-coming design trends.

Is there a go-to product that you’re really excited about right now? What is it, and why do you like it?

The waterjet marble mosaics we have make any room look instantly fabulous! Patterned tiles and glass tiles are also some of the products I really like to use. They add interest, depth, and brilliance.

Take us through the design process, from start to finish. What does this journey look like?

I like to get a feel for what my clients are looking for and how they want to use the space. A lot of people come in and have ideas that they have seen online. I like to incorporate hints of each person’s personality. I ask a lot of questions! I then start talking about different materials and price range. Walking through our selection with my clients helps me find that something special that they cannot live without. If they find something they absolutely love, I build around that.

What recent project have you been most excited about designing?

I recently had a client come in who had plans to flip their house. She gave me full creative freedom for every room in the house, including the single bathrooms, the kitchen, and the foyer.

We paired marble with wood-look tile so it could be transitioned from the classic look to the modern farmhouse look that has become very popular. Pairing the smooth finishes with some of weathered textures was key to putting the look together.

What trends are your clients bringing to you?

Customers are bringing me inspiration for marble bathrooms, and lots of people are loving the marble hexagons we have. My customers really love elegant and luxurious looks, but their expectations to get that luxurious look may already be low because of their budget. However, they’re always surprised to find luxury looks that fit their budget here at Floor & Decor with our everyday low prices!

What’s the best part about being a Floor & Decor Designer?

I love being part of the design process and seeing the finished result. I can’t help but get excited when customers visit me again and show me pictures of their finished project! Knowing that I was a part of a process that helped customers get the look that they’ve always wanted is a great feeling.

Any tips or pointers for those working on projects of their own?
