Designer Spotlight: Gentiana

The passion of Floor & Decor designer Gentiana is contagious. Her clients in Aurora sense her excitement when she designs a new space, and they are privy to her expert knowledge on up-to-date looks and designs!

How long have you worked in interior design? How long have you worked with Floor & Decor?

I was a graphic designer in Europe before I came to U.S. in 1999. I began my design career in the furniture manufacturing industry in 2000. Shortly after, I got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design and have been working with Floor & Decor since 2013.

How would you describe your personal style?

I gather my inspiration for my personal style from 18th– and 19th-century European decor. My style exemplifies elegance and timelessness. I pride myself in designing harmonious spaces with bold accents.

How do you stay on top of trends?

I follow style blogs and social media to see what’s trending in fashion and design. I utilize online communities such as Instagram, Houzz, and Pinterest. Merchandise Mart has been an exemplary tool in networking with other like-minded designers, so I’m able to see what designs will soon be in demand and what my clients will be interested to put in their spaces.

What trend are you really excited about right now?

I am most excited about the re-emergence of gold. You can see gold in everything from accents and trim. We’re even seeing bits of gold in stone, like in our Vianano Calacatta Gold Polished Marble Tile and Avillano Bianco Orion Marble Tile.

What new product do you absolutely love right now?

Marble has been a classic for centuries, yet we’re seeing so many new looks of it that it’s almost like it’s brand-new! Whether it’s in a simple tile or in a decorative mosaic, my customers can’t get enough of this timeless stone.

Take us through the design process, from start to finish. What does this journey look like?

I’m very excited when a new client walks into Floor & Decor. The first thing I ask them is what their life looks like. Do they entertain a lot? Do they have children? What type of activities will be shared in their space? The answers to these questions help me determine what type of design will suit their needs best.

What recent project have you been most excited about designing? (Tell us about the style, scope, challenges, the products/colors you chose.)

One memorable design I recently worked on was with a client who was looking to remodel his main bathroom. He initially struggled with introducing new elements to his design while staying true to the rest of his home’s style.

We decided on a soft, neutral palette to keep it versatile, then we used a detailed mosaic to add some personality to the space. The result was a serene and sophisticated space that the client was excited to use.

What’s the best part about being a Floor & Decor Design Consultant?

Not everyone has a career that lets them follow their passion. I consider myself very lucky to do what I love every day. Whether it’s designing high-end restaurants in downtown Chicago, or creating intimate looks for customer’s homes, I get to design all kinds of spaces.

Any tips and pointers for those working on projects of their own?

Always stay true to the styles you love when you’re picking things out, and consider how it’s going to impact your day-to-day life. When you pick out a look that fits both your personality and your lifestyle, you’ll achieve that space that’s perfect for you!
