Customer Questions & Answers

If installing a 6.5 LVP flooring over a concrete slab , can I use a 3 mm underlayment?

Asked by: Libby317
No, we do not recommend that. Unless it is a rubber underlayment that is approved by the flooring manufacturer, and in those cases it is only for glue down installations which is most common in the commercial flooring sector. We recommend using 6mil PE Film or Sentinel Protect Plus underlayment.

If installing 3mm LTV on a cement basement floor is this product needed? Will it serve as a vapor barrier?

Asked by: Kevin
Yes, we recommend using a vapor barrier in addition to Sentinel Protect Plus to prevent issues from hydro-static pressure from the concrete subfloor. The concrete in a home's foundation acts like a huge sponge and soaks up moisture, and the moisture can become trapped between the foundation and flooring. The vapor barrier is an investment in the long term to prevent issues with the flooring or the possibility of exposure to any long term issues that moisture exposure can create. The added benefits of Sentinel Protect plus are enhanced sound absorption, reduced heat/cold transfer, additional softness under foot and the moisture barrier. PE Film just provides a durable moisture barrier.

If I am laying the vinyl over vinyl do I need this underlayment? What else do I need for this project?

Asked by: Lynne
It is important to consult your installation instructions for guidance on installation of the flooring over existing flooring to make sure you meet all of the requirements before beginning. After you have confirmed your site is suitable for a floor over floor installation, the underlayment in question will provide additional cushion under foot, sound absorption and help reduce the heat/cold transfer that occurs between the foundation and the flooring. Some common tools that are needed for flooring installation are as follows: • Proper Safety Equipment • Tape Measure • Saw (Table Saw, Miter Saw, and Jamb Saw) • Framing Angle • Painters Tape • Pull Bar • Pry Bar • Rubber Mallet • Spacers • Moisture Meter for RH testing • Setting Materials like Underlayment, Adhesive or Moisture Barriers • Quarter Round or Baseboards • Transition Moldings • Demolition Equipment like scrapers or grinders • Self-Leveler (most substrates are not smooth) • Patching compounds to repair imperfections in the substrate • Cleaning Materials for after installation
