Hardwood Flooring Frequently Asked Questions
How do you stain hardwood floors?
Unfinished hardwood flooring is a great solution for those who want to further customize their home’s interior. Unfinished hardwood floors provide you with endless options for stain and color, and Floor & Decor offers all of the floor preparation materials—including stain—you need for a beautiful, finished project. To stain your unfinished hardwood floors, you can follow these simple steps:
- Test out your hardwood floor stain in an inconspicuous area to ensure you’re satisfied with your color choice.
- Sand and clean the floor by following our approved floor preparation guide. Preparation depends on your floor and finishing system.
- Apply stain and let it dry completely.
- Apply finish.
How do you clean hardwood floors?
Cleaning hardwood floors is simple, and Floor & Decor offers all of the cleaning supplies you need. Sweep or vacuum using a hard-floor setting to remove dust and debris. Clean with a microfiber mop and a manufacturer-approved hardwood floor cleaner. Avoid excess water, harsh detergents, and homemade cleaning solutions. Wet mop only products whose care instructions specifically permit it, including qualifying AquaGuard Wood products. Always follow the product’s care instructions.
How do you refinish hardwood?
When it comes to refinishing your hardwood flooring, there are a few things to consider. Namely, can you refinish your hardwood floors? It’s important to keep in mind that not all hardwood floors can be refinished. Most solid floors can be refinished multiple times, while engineered hardwood floors may not tolerate refinishing. Bamboo floors cannot be sanded or resurfaced, but they can be refreshed with a Screen and Recoat (or Buff and Coat). This process does not touch the bamboo grass or the thin veneer at all. It uses a very light buffing pad to scuff up the factory clear-coat scratch layer, allowing a fresh, shiny new topcoat to stick to the surface. If you’ve determined that your hardwood floors can be refinished, then you can follow these simple steps:
- Prepare the floors by hammering down protruding nails, vacuuming and sweeping away dust and debris, and sealing air vents.
- Pull up the shoe base molding.
- Sand and clean the floor by following our approved floor preparation guide [LINK TBD]. Preparation depends on your floor and finishing system.
- If desired, apply wood stain and let it dry completely.
- Apply finish.
