Customer Questions & Answers

Which is done first: Condition then seal or Seal first then condition?

Asked by: Marti
Our butcherblocks are unfinished so that you can finish appropriately to the application of the installation. If you are using it in a food preparation, or area where food will be touching, it is wise to use the conditioner and apply it as often as the countertop begins to absorb water instead of repelling the moisture. For nonfood surfaces and areas that will be exposed to moisture you can use a finish like oil or even a more permanent sealer option like Poly Urethane. We do not recommend conditioning it and then sealing it separately. The conditioner is oil based and the top coat sealer will not dry or cure properly. You can view our conditioners here:

Are both sides of this countertop useable as the "top" surface. As in, could I cut my corner angle, then flip over one piece to make the corner so there is no wasted material?

Asked by: ReginaP
Yes, both sides of this butcher block countertop can be used as a "top facing" surface.

How thick is the butcher block? Also, is this edge grain? And finally, is this solid wood or a veneer?

Asked by: Jan K.
This butcher block has a thickness of 1 1/2". This is a solid wood countertop and is edge grain.

How are they "conditioned" and how are they "sealed"?

Asked by: Skeeter
All of our Wood Countertops are unsealed and lightly sanded to prepare them for a sealer, stain or conditioning treatment. For areas that will come in contact with food, it is best to make sure that you use a food safe conditioning oil like the Howard’s Butcher Block conditioner -
